Remake of a famous American clock oil |
Elgin Watch Oil Elgin Watch Grease The American clock oil, ELGIN, has not been produced for many years. In response to the impassioned and insistent requests of the American Watchmaker Society, we resynthesized this famous oil.
About 20 samples of the old products were obtained from the USA and analyzed in our lab and in Switzerland. Some of the sample bottles were more than 20 years old.
The oil was fully functional even though it was darker from age or impurities.
After an extensive analysis with infrared spectrometers and mass spectrometers, the oil was synthesized over a period of 14 months.
Two products are available:

1.)

Elgin Watch Oil - Synthetic precision clock oil for jewel and metal bearings
Application: For jewel bearings made of metal (such as ruby/steel, sapphire/steel, brass/steel, steel/steel, etc.) in watches, alarm clocks and large clocks For all radial and axial bearings, jewel holes, anchor plates, journal bearings, escapements, and miniature ball bearings.
Comments: Very good friction behavior even when the surface pressure is high. Outstanding wear-reducing properties. Very good adhesion of the oil to the surfaces. Special wetting modifiers prevent the oil from spreading. Point lubrication is hence possible. No corrosion or oxidation of metal materials. Very good aging stability even when non-ferrous metals are used. Life-long lubrication is possible. Very favorable lubrication properties both at low and high temperatures. Should not be used to lubricate plastics.

Elgin Watch Grease - Synthetic precision grease for watches
Uses: for metal sliding pairs (steel/non-ferrous metal, aluminum, etc.) in watches, clockworks and instruments. For lubricating journal bearings, hoist mechanisms, latches and pawls, open slide-ways, tension springs and pallet pins.
Comments: Metal soap grease based on ester oil with an inorganic gel thickener adjusted to a very soft consistency. Can provide very good lubrication at sites under a high bearing load. Very low static friction. Very good adhesion of the grease to the lubrication site. No oil separation. Not suitable for lubricating plastics.
