Lubricants

Precision lubricants ensure the smooth functioning of watches, clocks, instruments and high-precision mechanics.

Schmierung 02 884x492px
Schmierung 06 884x492px

Since 70 years we have been producing precision watch and instrument oils as well as fully synthetic special oils and greases for precision engineering that can be used for years on component groups that may be exposed to extremely high or low temperatures.

The demands on precision lubricants are very high. They have to be resistant to aging, optimally wet the contact points and must not spread. In addition, lubricants must withstand heavy loads, such as high surface pressures in the sliding contact, and of course reduce friction and wear. Their application should be possible at very high and very low temperatures without changing their physical properties too much. In addition, the lubricant should protect metallic components from corrosion and also show no incompatibilities with respect to polymeric materials.

Accordingly, care must be taken in the development and production of precision lubricants, because even the slightest deviation in viscosity can, for example, lead to malfunctions in sensitive measuring instruments. This may be associated with far-reaching consequences.

One of our core competences lies in the development of tailor-made lubricants for the respective applications of our customers. With our experience and our know-how, we ensure quality for our customers in a wide variety of areas - including the automotive industry, electrical engineering, precision mechanics, horological and instrument technology, medical technology and model making.

Give us a call! We are happy to assist.

Coatings

Epilamisation – a smart method to prevent creeping of lubricants.

Epilamisierung 02 884x492px
Epilamisierung 04 884x492px

By means of a surface coating with our epilams, the wetting behaviour of lubricants on surfaces can be purposefully influenced. During epilamisation, a very thin and invisible partially fluorinated polymer layer is applied in layer thicknesses below 0.1 μm, which has a surface-active effect and prevents the spreading of lubricants on component surfaces.

This effect is used, on the one hand, to reliably fix smallest lubricant volumes over the life of the components at the lubrication point, thereby preventing lack of lubricant and its consequences. On the other hand, adjacent component surfaces can be protected against creeping lubricants and process fluids, and thus unwanted interactions can be avoided. Such interactions may include, for example, embrittlement of materials, destruction of seals and adhesives, or damage to electrical contacts. Malfunctions or even failures may be safely avoided.

In many areas of the automotive industry, the epilamisation of components is already considered a standard procedure to keep lubricants stationary or to protect surface zones. In the area of electromechanical and electronic components, the industry is increasingly turning to epilamising all safety-relevant components in the machining process, thus further improving the reliability of their components.

Our epilams are process-reliable and suitable for use with almost all materials. They are non-inflammable, do not attack adhesives and paints and are also compatible with plastics. Their ease of use allows them to be used efficiently in many areas and industries to protect component groups and extend the lifecycle of products.

The application of our epilams does not require complicated workflows within your production process. On request, we can also assume this process on your component in our facilities.

Give us a call! We are happy to assist.

An Image as an Appreciation Inspires Reflection

An Image as an Appreciation Inspires Reflection
Artist Reinhard Wollherr

In cooperation with the French Research Institute IREIS in St. Etienne, Dr. Tillwich GmbH has developed a piston ring test bench for internal combustion engines.

The test bench can primarily reduce costs, test time and exhaust emissions. In addition, correlations can be assessed in a resource-saving manner, which lead to new, energy-saving solutions and concepts with an improved carbon footprint.

Articles on this subject have been published in the local daily press. The reader Reinhard Wollherr, an artist from Freudenstadt, promptly donated a prize in terms of an artwork he created out of enthusiasm about the sustainability aspect of the developed test bench. Created in digital airbrush technology, the image, which is a colourful pop art following the style of Andy Warhol, conveys on four levels the message behind it as a warning against global warming covering the period from 1850 to 2020.

The message of the picture is: "Global Warming - Global Thinking - Local Action“

Each and every one of us is requested to counteract global warming through personal and meaningful commitment, even in a small range.

The artwork was handed over on 28.07.2020 at the development site in Ahldorf by the artist Reinhard Wollherr and his son Eric Wollherr. The company Dr. Tillwich GmbH was represented by the managing director Susanne Beyer-Faiß and the developer Werner Stehr.

09.06.20 | World Novelty from Ahldorf
World Novelty from Ahldorf

World Novelty from Ahldorf

The internal combustion engine in motor vehicles will exist for many years on in addition to the electric motor drives. In order to preserve resources and the environment, automobile manufacturers undertake great efforts to further improve the efficiency of engines.

Efficiency is reduced by the friction of the moving parts in the engine. Here especially in the piston-cylinder system, where 40% of the friction losses occur. The combustion pressure moves the pistons down with great force and drives the vehicle via the crankshaft. The higher this pressure, the better the engine's performance. The piston rings, which are pressed against the cylinder wall, prevent pressure loss. This is where the largest part of the total friction in the engine is created. Today, attempts are made to reduce frictional losses by 10-20% by using low-viscous lubricants with special additives, by using optimized materials and by changing the design of the rings, thereby significantly reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

In cooperation with the French research institute IREIS in St. Etienne, a test device (tribometer) was developed in a three-year collaboration, which now allows to investigate and analyze these friction processes on different piston rings and cylinder materials depending on engine speed, oil temperature and contact pressure in a laboratory test.

With the measurement methodology used here, it is no longer necessary to operate engines fired in order to obtain the necessary measurement data. This saves considerable costs and testing time while avoiding exhaust emissions.

Based on the measurement data from this innovative tribometer, it is expected that the optimization of the piston-cylinder assembly will have a significant contribution to reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in conventional internal combustion engines and hybrid cars.

Graduates of the Master`s Class of Watchmakers (Staatliche Feintechnikschule) from Villingen-Schwenningen on Factory Tour

Ten future masters of watch makers and their instructor were informed about the specific properties of lubricants, which are used in watch and clock industry. Starting with an introductory lecture of Managing Director Susanne Beyer-Faiß the graduates got answers to most interesting questions, for example what kind of lubricant concepts do exist, where are their strengths and their weaknesses, how to choose the correct lubricant, and how to read technical data sheets.

During a subsequent tour of the lubricant laboratory, the production, the tribological test field and the operating areas of the company, visitors were able to deepen their knowledge. Not even a small snack at the end of the visit was able to interrupt the lively discussions on watch and clock lubricants. As a farewell, each visitor received a sample set containing the most common watch and clock oils, greases and epilams.

New test method for measuring the adhesive forces of lubricants on surfaces under dynamic conditions

Lube Magazine published the latest results of Susanne Beyer-Faiss from our lubricant laboratory dealing with the measurement of adhesive properties of lubricants on surfaces.
Within the scope of a research project a test method has been developed which allows to dynamically measuring the adhesive force of a lubricant drop directly on the respective materials and surfaces with the technology of a centrifuge. The detection of adhesion forces under dynamic conditions extends the range of laboratory test methods for the characterization of surface wetting properties. In particular, the possibility of testing on real component surfaces and with small oil volumes opens up new aspects for the function prediction of life-time lubricated systems in precision engineering.
